Loud blasts reported not far from Gaddafi's compound

Witnesses and journalists have reported hearing loud explosions and seeing smoke rising not far from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli.
News sources also say that heavy gunfire and anti-aircraft fire went on in the center of Tripoli for half an hour around the time of the explosions. One BBC correspondant in Tripoli who confirmed the explosions and gunfire added that Gaddafi's compound is situated in the Bab-al-Aziziya area of the city and that there are also air-defense weapons in that area which may have been the target of any attack.

Radioactive cloud from Japan headed for U.S. west coast

How dangerous is a radioactive cloud? Because of the nuclear crisis in Japan, Americans on the west coast may find out soon enough.
Japan's nuclear reactor crisis may now be affecting America, but not at any dangerous levels. Reports state that a radioactive cloud has formed and is heading for the Unites States' west coast. Fortunately the cloud's radiation concentration is relatively low. The cloud will also likely become diluted over time.
In fact, the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan sailed into the radioactive cloud as it left Japan. Military officials say that the sailors' level of radiation exposure in an hour was equal to that of 1 months' exposure to the natural radiation in our general environment.

'Supermoon' provides rare spectacle for 7 billion people (Includes first-hand account)

- Professional and amateur stargazers gathered in empty spaces around the globe to watch the moon light up the sky Saturday night. The Earth's guardian appeared approximately 14 percent bigger and more than 30 percent brighter.

The moon is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system and has been labelled by ancient civilizations as Earth’s protector, or guardian if you will. Its origins haven’t conclusively been identified, but there are several theories and even those cannot hold ground because of many aspects that contradict them.

NASA releases video to counter 'super moon' catastrophe worries

+
To counter rising internet speculation that a 'super moon' can cause widespread natural disasters, NASA distributed a video on the orbital phenomenon.
As recurring orbital events are concerned, "super moons" have their own astrological catastrophe theorists. With the specter of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami on the collective minds of humanity, this is understandable and at least forgivable.
The theory ascertains that a "super moon," a full moon at lunar perigee that occurs every 18 to 20 years, draws close enough to the earth to trigger large scale events like earthquakes and volcano eruptions.
"The question is not actually so crazy. In fact scientists have studied related scenarios for decades. Even under normal conditions, the moon is close enough to Earth to make its weighty presence felt: It causes the ebb and flow of the ocean tides,"International Business Times reported, attributing a Space.com article.
In an effort to counter these prophesies, NASA released a video on the internet to explain the nature of the "super moon" phenomenon.
"Full moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the moon's orbit," the NASA voice-over explains. "It is an ellipse, with one side, perigee, about 50,000 kilometers closer to the earth than the other, apogee."
The NASA video further explained that a "super moon" is just 14 percent larger than lesser and more usual moons.
"A perigee full moon brings with it extra-high perigean tides, but this is nothing to worry about," NASA notes in the video. "In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters, that is an inch or so, higher than usual."
NASA specifically addresses the internet theorists as well, explaining that full moons at perigee do not trigger natural disasters. Instead, as NASA suggests, "super moons" offer another opportunity to observe and enjoy nature's beauty.

Stephen Harper says Canada at war to protect civilians in Libya

+
“Do we believe in freedom, or do we just say we believe in freedom?
Stephen Harper asked Canadians that question in a statement at an emergency meeting on Libya yesterday.
The answer, he continued, was given by the UN Security Council earlier this week when a no-fly zone and additional sanctions were passed to protect citizens in Libya from being attacked by the government.
Canadian aircraft and HMCS Charlottetown are part of the coalition assembling in the region. Canada did not take part in the initial strikes. Canada has committed the use of six CF-18 fighter jets to enforce the no-fly zone.
On Saturday Libya proclaimed a ceasefire after scores of missiles rocketed the country from coalition forces. Cruise missiles and U.S. bombers have destroyed much of Libya's anti-aircraft system according to The Globe and Mail. Those targets were selected as a means of self protection for coalition forces so that they can enforce the no-fly zone. City News reports that there were 20 targets hit on Saturday.
On Saturday Harper voiced out loud that the goal is to drive Gadhafi from power in Libya, reports City News.
"He simply will not last very long. I think that is the basis on which we're moving forward. If I am being frank here, that is probably more understood than spoken aloud. But I just said it aloud," Harper said.

Wild goose undergoes surgery to remove arrow piercing its chest

+
Denver - A Canada goose that has been waddling around a Colorado city park for over a month with an arrow piercing through its chest has finally been captured by wildlife rescuers and taken to a veterinarian for medical attention.
The goose, who has been 'Quille', was first spotted Feb 12 in Washington Park and for almost six weeks the wild goose chase continued as Quille managed to evade his rescuers and their efforts to trap him.
The goose had reportedly been seen numerous times at Washington Park and neighboring Garland Park by residents of the community but he managed to remain elusive and avoided the good intentioned park visitors who also tried to catch the wounded Canadian visitor.
"We knew where she was for several weeks, but it was hard to catch her with all the people around," says Gabriele Braunschweiger, who volunteers with the Wild B.I.R.D. Rehabilitation Center in Denver. "Everyone tried to catch her and that made her skittish," reported KWGN Denver.

Arab League denounces Libya strikes as Qatar pledges to join in

Arab League denounces Libya strikes as Qatar pledges to join in

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa has denounced military strikes on Libya and called an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis.
The Arab League joined international calls for a no-fly zone over the country last week.
The League's withdrawal of support for coalition strikes could be a major setback. "Regional consent" was cited by a number of world leaders as a prerequisite for action, and Arab League approval was pivotal in attaining UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which authorises "all necessary measures [barring occupation] to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack."
But responding to reports of US, French and UK air strikes and cruise missile attacks, Moussa stated: "What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone, and what we want is the protection of civilians and not the bombardment of more civilians.

Operating Systems by Abraham Silberchatz,Peter Baer Galvin,Greg Gagne

Operating system
Operating systems are large and complex, and yet must function with near-absolute reliability--that's why they're a class unto themselves in the field of software development. Since its first release 20 years ago, "the dinosaur book"--Operating System Concepts by Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, and Greg Gagne--has been a valuable reference for designers and implementers of operating systems. The newly released sixth edition of this book maintains the volume's authority with new sections on thread management, distributed processes, and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). There's also information on the workings of the latest crop of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Linux, FreeBSD, and compact operating systems for handheld devices.

This book is concerned with the design of operating systems, which is to say it enumerates the problems that pop up in the creation of efficient systems and explores alternative ways of dealing with them, detailing the advantages and shortcomings of each. For example, in their chapter on scheduling CPU activity, the authors explain several algorithms (first-come, first-served, and round-robin scheduling, among others) for allocating the capacity of single and multiple processors among jobs. They highlight the relative advantages of each, and explain how several real-life operating systems solve the problem. They then present the reader with exercises (this book is essentially a university textbook) that inspire thought and discussion. --David Wall

Topics covered: The problems faced by designers of system software for electronic computers, and strategies that have been developed over the past 20 years to address (and, in some cases, solve) them. Problems of CPU scheduling, memory allocation, paging, processes and threads, storage management, distributed processes and storage mechanisms, and security are all discussed thoroughly and with many authoritative references. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
This book provides a clear description of the concepts that underlie operating systems. In this book, the authors do not concentrate on any particular operating system or hardware. Instead, they discuss fundamental concepts that are applicable to a variety of systems. The book presents a large number of examples that pertain specifically to UNIX and to other popular operating systems.

Data Structures And Algorithm Analysis By Mark Allen Weiss Free Download

Data Structures And Algorithm Analysis
In this book describes data structures, methods of organizing large amounts of data, and algorithm analysis, the estimation of the running time of algorithms. As computers become faster and faster, the need for programs that can handle large amounts of input becomes more acute. Paradoxically, this requires more careful attention to efficiency, since inefficiencies in programs become most obvious when input sizes are large. By analyzing an algorithm before it is actually coded, students can decide if a particular solution will be feasible. For example, in this text students look at specific problems and see how careful implementations can reduce the time constraint for large amounts of data from 16 years to less than a second. Therefore, no algorithm or data structure is presented without an explanation of its running time. In some cases, minute details that affect the running time of the implementation are explored.

Once a solution method is determined, a program must still be written. As computers have become more powerful, the problems they solve have become larger and more complex, thus requiring development of more intricate programs to solve the problems. The goal of this text is to teach students good programming and algorithm analysis skills simultaneously so that they can develop such programs with the maximum amount of efficiency.

This book is suitable for either an advanced data structures (CS7) course or a first-year graduate course in algorithm analysis. Students should have some knowledge of intermediate programming, including such topics as pointers and recursion, and some background in discrete math.
